What Causes Anxiety & Depression
When we experience long-term or traumatic stress, our brain changes in ways that cause us to lose control of our emotions, and we suffer physical, mental, and emotional consequences. Over time, stress creates anxiety and depression.
The causes of anxiety and depression can be complicated. What we should not do is define anxiety or depression simply as a chemical imbalance in our brain. Even if our brain has a chemical imbalance, that is not the primary cause of our anxiety or depression. The cause of our emotional imbalance is how we deal with stress and the effect of stress on our brain. When we experience excessive stress, our brain changes in ways that allow us to develop anxiety and depression. Stress can come from various sources—the stress of everyday life, work, school, relationships, loss, finances, and more.
There is also the stress of being who we are, our expectations, insecurities, and our inner belief system that determines what we believe about ourselves, other people, and the world around us. We can have negative beliefs about ourselves, others, and the world that cause us to make choices based on these beliefs. Sometimes, our beliefs can subconsciously hold us back by causing us to make choices based on false assumptions about ourselves and the world around us. These negative and false inner beliefs can predispose us to a higher level of stress adding to the stressors of our everyday life, contributing to our anxiety and depression. It's important that we learn how to stop anxiety and depression, so we can move forward in our lives.
